Planning a trip this year? Head as far west as you can go down highway 180 away from the daily grind to a place that combines immaculate nature, unique American History, and tons of fun activities for the whole family – Fort Morgan, Alabama.
The Fort
Fort Morgan is a beautiful destination for civil war buffs and vacation goers alike. Named a national landmark in 1960, The United States has few places remaining with a rich history quite like Fort Morgan. Overtaken by the British in the War of 1812 and later returned to the US as a part of the treaty to end the war, the Fort was repurposed and used in the Civil War to provide protection for blockade-runners. Pivotal in the Battle of Mobile Bay, the surrounding gulf is the site where Admiral David Farragut famously shouted, “Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead.”
The army abandoned the Fort for good in 1947, turning it over to the state of Alabama. The site now is terrific tourist spot filled with beautiful natural views, ideal hiking experience, and scenic shorelines.
Bring the family to Fall Garrison Living History Day on October 17 to see live artillery and infantry demonstrations throughout the day and learn something new about what life was like during the Civil War.
Take the Mobile Bay Ferry
