The biggest festival of the year took place this past weekend in Gulf Shores, and like every year before, 2016’s incarnation of The Hangout delivered! Concert goers came out in droves for this year’s lineup, which included The Weekend, Elie Goulding, Florence + the Machine and our state’s very own Alabama Shakes.

Pre-sale tickets were totally sold out for VIP, General Admission, and Super VIP, so scoring a spot for the world’s best beach concert was difficult.
But getting in wasn’t the weekend’s biggest obstacle. Much drama ensued as mother nature had her say in Friday and Saturday’s pre-determined schedule. Having resided in Gulf Shores for many years, I’ve learned that stormy weather is a threat to most outdoor events. Adding thunder and lightning to tens of thousands of people, light shows, and electric equipment is downright dangerous. But after an hours-long delay, the show went on.
To top it off, Saturday headliner Calvin Harris was hospitalized in a head-on car accident earlier in the weekend. His injuries were non-life-threatening, but doctors told him he wouldn’t be performing at Orange Beach. Scrambling for a new headliner, the Hangout Fest chose Panic! At the Disco. The pop rock band from Las Vegas dazzled, performing a slew of their hits and well-known covers.
Despite the hiccups, all reviews were very positive, and a good time was had by all.
The Hangout Music Festival began in 2010 in front of roughly 15,000 people. In 2014, we hosted 40,000 people on the beach, up 5,000 from the previous year. 2016 promises to be another record as well, as the same company who runs the famous Coachella Music Festival helped facilitate the event. Past performers include Foo Fighters, Paul Simon, Jack White, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dave Matthews Band, Stevie Wonder, The Black Keys, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, and OutKast.
