The sandy white beaches, wispy dunes, and vibrant wetlands of Fort Morgan offer residents and visitors alike a gracious slice of serenity and ambiance. Beyond the sand, surf, and sun, Fort Morgan, Alabama, is also an intriguing destination for people looking to re-connect with Mother Earth. Here, our residents and guests can intermingle with an array of regional wildlife in their well-preserved natural habitats.
Research has shown that connecting with nature yields real health benefits for human beings – with the potential to reduce stress levels, promote cardiovascular exercise, and can help positively shape new and existing interpersonal relationships – and there are few places in the United States as beautiful as south Alabama.
Highlighted below are five ways to connect with the natural inhabitants and intrinsic beauty found only in Fort Morgan.
Search for Sea Turtles
The Gulf Cost is home to a thriving sea turtle population. In May each year, momma turtles start making their wayto the shore to nest and lay eggs – an average of 110 eggs per nest that incubate for 55 to 70 days. Hundreds of volunteers monitor the sites beginning in late spring and into fall – protecting the nests and hatchlings from natural and human threats.
If you’re lucky enough to encounter a sea turtle or her hatchlings on one of Fort Morgan’s beautiful shorelines, the most important rule of thumb is this: Look but don’t touch!
Fishing
Fishing is a wonderful way to interact with nature, and Fort Morgan provides seemingly endless opportunities to connect you with our unique coastal environment. Grab your gear and head over to the Pier at Gulf State Park, Waterfront Park, or Orange Beach. If you’re looking for a little more action, there are countless charter companies in the area for day and half-day rates, so you can go after that big catch in the open water. Remember though, there are 28 species of protected marine life inhabiting the waters and shores off the Gulf Coast. Be sure to review this list before dropping your line in the sea or meandering about the shoreline.
Gulf State Park for Hiking and Biking
There are few things better for your health than hiking, biking, or running in an environment like Gulf State Park – don’t miss this opportunity to reconnect with nature. Visit the park for its sprawling two miles of public beaches. The park also hosts seven hiking and biking trails, staggered along 25 miles of terrain, guiding you through six distinct ecosystems. You may even encounter a bobcat or alligator along your way – look but don’t touch those creators either – sometimes nature bites back!
Hummingbirds
Fort Morgan boast a host of bird species to watch and admire, and has been designated as one of the “One hundred Globally Important Bird Cities” by the American Bird Conservator. Hummingbirds are abundant in coastal Alabama; effortless in flight, these birds symbolize frivolity, and freedom – easy to spot, abundant everywhere, and if you’re patient enough, you can even feed hummingbirds right out of your own palm!
Beach Meditation
According to the National Institute of Health meditation is a great way to reduce stress and to decrease any number of serious health risks. Let nature do most of the work for you – just sit back, take in the elements, and let Mother Earth envelop your mind, body, and soul into a higher state of consciousness. Head to the beach with a towel or yoga mat, relax, take it all in, become one with your surroundings, and connect with nature.
