Gulf Shores, Alabama, is a small coastal city located in Baldwin County on the Gulf of Mexico. It is the southernmost city or town in Alabama, located near the end of the Mobile Point Peninsula, east of the historic Fort Morgan and the Fort Morgan community. Gulf Shores is a rapidly growing town, almost doubling in size between 2000 and 2010. In 2013, the town had a population of over 10,700 people.
The city is largely reliant on its beachfront and tourism industry, which brought in 62 percent of its revenue last year. As the population continues to grow, the city council has decided to improve the town and the beach, taking sustainable action that will allow Gulf Shores to thrive long into the future. In June of 2014, the city council of Gulf Shores, Alabama, introduced the Small Town, Big Beach Vision 2025 for Sustainability.
This plan seeks to take action in five major areas of the city: Medical, Educational, Gulf State Park, Waterway District, and Gulf Beach District. Improvement in these areas will help Gulf Shores become a more sustainable small town destination community with a diversified economy and protected environmental treasures. To better achieve these goals and take aggressive steps toward making their vision a reality, Gulf Shores City Council has just announced their first five year plan of Vision 2025.
According to Mayor Robert Craft, this 5 year plan is the step by step instruction guide for working towards the goals set in Vision 2025. A few of the items on the 5 year plan include:
- Raising the funds to build a new high school, relocate the middle school, and expand the elementary school in Gulf Shores. The five year plan calls for the new high school to be opened in 2018.
- Furthering development of pedestrian walkways around the Gulf Beach District and along the Intracoastal Waterway.
- Supporting the state’s plan to build the Gulf State Park Lodge and Conference Center.
- Completing a comprehensive recycling program along the beach front by 2015.
- Conducting a feasibility study on a possible trolley system and other modes of public transport to determine ways in which the city can focus on improving public transportation.
The work being done at Gulf Shores will not only benefit the city, but its neighbors in Orange Beach and Fort Morgan, as well. These nearby communities will experience growth if Gulf Shores Vision 2025 is successful, and the already prime real estate will become even more desirable.
