At Kris L. Powell and Associates, we love when tourists visit Fort Morgan, Alabama and the surrounding cities. We know many of our natives and tourists are avid golfers. Therefore, we’re pleased to announce Kiva Dunes Golf Course of Gulf Shores, AL will begin a renovation project on July 7, 2015. The renovation project is aimed at keeping the golf course as pristine and accessible as possible while bringing in more players.
Kiva Dunes celebrated its twentieth anniversary on April 1, 2015. It’s been named one of the “Best You Can Play” courses courtesy of Golf Week, because its courses cater to golfers of all levels. However, some existing aspects of Kiva Dunes can make play difficult. The renovation project will involve eliminating some of these difficulties while maintaining a challenging course for advanced golfers.
One of the biggest renovations involves replacing the current Champion turf grass with Tif-eagle turf, which is easier for golfers to walk and play on. Kiva Dunes officials will rebuild bunkers and perform re-vegetation of existing course plants and grasses. Fairways will undergo rototilling, which will help make Kiva Dunes more environmentally friendly. Additional environmental improvements include smooth transitions between turf and natural beach terrain and removal of disruptive organic matter.
Gulf Shores, Alabama contains a “proven golf market” that has attracted tourists ever since Kiva Dunes opened in 1995. The $15 million enhancement project is sure to improve the Kiva Dunes course itself and its environmental friendliness. For example, a golf course that’s exposed to the high winds and unpredictable precipitation of the beach can experience more wear and tear than usual. This depreciates aesthetics and property values and may keep players from coming back. Consistent damage can compromise the course’s integrity as well; obstacles may become too easy or difficult to navigate, and the terrain can become unpleasant or dangerous to walk on. Routine maintenance and renovations like this one ensure golfers enjoy the game and get their money’s worth, while making sure the course stays in great shape.
Additionally, the Kiva Dunes enhancement project is sure to help the surrounding environment. In Fort Morgan, we’re committed to living green and protecting our natural resources. Yet erosion and the buildup of too much organic matter compromises the ecosystem, especially in places like golf courses, where human presence is high. The cleanup, use of fresh turf, and natural transitions will help preserve the course’s natural beauty.
Golfers will be pleased to know Jerry Pate, the original Kiva Dunes designer and U.S. Open winner, will supervise the renovations. The staff at Kris L. Powell, and Fort Morgan, Alabama citizens all look forward to another twenty years with Kiva Dunes.
