Big News Gulf Shores”¦
The NCAA is awarding our city the inaugural two NCAA Beach Volleyball Tournaments in 2016-17. The contests will be held at the Gulf Shores Public Beach and will be hosted by both the city and the Orange Beach Sports Commission.
This isn’t the first time we’ve hosted a big-time tournament. In fact since 2012, we’ve been the proud host of the AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball Championships. Last year’s title was won by the top-seeded duo of Sara Hughes and Kelly Claes, who dispatched the number two seed handily in the finals of the Team Championships.
Beach Volleyball is the NCAA’s 90th different championship. Of course the city itself isn’t a stranger to NCAA events, either, as we also prepare for the 2015 SEC Women’s Soccer Championships at the Orange Beach Sportsplex coming up.
The beautiful thing about choosing Gulf Shores is the scenery surrounding the event. The NCAA is a non-profit whose job is to administer and govern college athletics. Their Championships and Alliances departments helps facilitate the selection of host sites, and if I do say so myself they’ve hit a homerun for their first Sand Volleyball tournament.
Now fans and teams alike are able to travel to beautiful Orange Beach and pass the time between sets with all sorts of activities. The city offers a number of accommodations, including restaurants, parks, golf courses, and an all around good time!
