The reports have finally come in regarding changes to the Leave Only Footprints ordinance implemented after 2016’s spring break season, and the results were eye-opening.
Over 812,000 pounds (!!!) of material has been picked up since the program launched, and without a doubt the beaches of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are cleaner. This number is an accumulation of the trash picked up during the day as well as whatever items were left overnight.
City officials are very pleased with the progress and are excited to see where the program is headed, as without a doubt Leave Only Footprints has accomplished their goal to ensure the Gulf Coast will stay beautiful for years to come.
These are just a few of the basic rules of the Leave Only Footprints program enforced by local, state and federal officials
– Anything left on the beach one hour after sunset will be removed and disposed of by beach patrol. Items include chairs, tents and anything else beachgoers use.
– Properly disposing of trash is required. The city made it much easier to recycle by placing blue recycling receptacles near the end of the boardwalks, and littering is more likely to be enforced.
– People are advised to avoid stepping on any vegetation to keep the dunes system intact.
Let’s face it: it’s not too difficult to follow these orders. Taking your beach possessions home with you when you’re finished isn’t a terrible hardship. It’s common courtesy, and it keeps as pristine as possible for the next day.
It’s been reported that over five million visitors travel from across the world to enjoy Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. The opportunity to experience the beaches in the best possible condition shouldn’t be compromised so that people can leave their items out overnight. The Leave Only Footprints program is great for a sustainable Gulf Shores, and we’re on board with that!
