It was an upset at court three at the Hangout in Gulf Shores, on May 8 as the No. 2 seed USC Trojans swept the top-seeded Florida State Seminoles to take home the inaugural NCAA Beach Volleyball Championships. The tournament was held at the Gulf Shores Public Beach and was hosted by the Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Sports Commission.
Since last October’s announcement that the tournament would be held in our great city, anticipation has grown significantly among locals about hosting not only a major sporting event but an inaugural national championship. And the ladies certainly delivered on the sand. The Women of Troy picked up their school’s 101st NCAA title in convincing fashion, only dropping one point in four duals. USC also won the first ever indoor volleyball championship in 1981 and now holds the first ever outdoor title. Quite the accomplishment!
Since 2012, we proudly hosted the AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball Championship. When it was announced that the NCAA, one of the most prestigious institutions in our country, would be forming a new championship, the Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Sports Commission moved quickly to secure the event. One unique feature of Gulf Shores in comparison to other large beach communities is our rich tradition of hosting sporting events.
The Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Sports Commission is a partnership between Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Tourism, Coastal Alabama Business Chamber and the cities of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach dedicated to bringing great sporting events to our area. In the next couple weeks, we have the AHSAA Regional Softball Championship, the 2016 South USA Grappling Alabama State Championships, the 2016 3rd Annual Battle at the Beach Open Karate Tournament, the 2016 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships and the 9th Annual Youth Basketball of America Gulf Coast Challenge. We’re blessed with great leadership that continues to bring exciting sporting events to our area. I for one am excited for what the future holds!
